Charity Begins At Home

Some of you may remember my earlier post titled Care in the Community in which I mentioned recycling that could benefit the community.  I still take my papers to the Community Centre recycling bank but now I am in an organised  frame of mind I wanted to combine decluttering with recycling whilst knowing it is benefiting somebody.  Normally, any unwanted clothes go to a local charity shop but I have since joined a local group on Facebook (you may have them in your area too) where you give away your unwanted items and people ask to be added to be in with a chance of winning your item.

I know charity shops do a fantastic job and I do still give to them, but for me, I wanted to know if my things would help somebody within my local community.  I would sooner give away stuff to a local family in need of it.  Not only that, by doing this, I am getting to  meet some fantastic people from all generations who really are truly grateful for what they are given, and likewise, I too have had things that I have needed.  This little group has brought a lovely community feel back to the area.  This has not happened overnight but the impression I am getting is that people are talking again.

Take Saturday for example, somebody posted that a keyboard was needed asap as her son had to learn a song that week for school. I can fully empathise with children telling you they need things at the last minute. I didn't have one but knew Unthrifty Sis did, and hated it.  I told her the story and would she be willing to lend her keyboard to someone whom she had never met.  She jumped at the chance.  Not only did it benefit the lady needing it, but my sister was able to off load an annoying item and now had an excuse to do so.  The lady was very appreciative and promised to return it a week later to which Unthrifty Sis said it didn't matter as she could have it.  Two people very happy thanks to this local group.

I sorted some of elder 2's clothes last night.  They think if they wear it more than once to go out in, it is no good.  Hence, my airing cupboard  is bulging at it's hinges.  Some stuff is brand new and that will be going on Ebay.  The rest will be given away.  I uploaded a few photos and by 6pm everything had gone.  The clothes had gone to good homes and I was now able to see a little gap in my airing cupboard.  It was a win win situation.  I'm off now to sort out a bit more.  I'm hoping to get round to tackling my bookcase in the near future but I seem to have more of an attachment to books than to clothes. Although, as you can see, it does need sorting!

  1. I can't bear parting with books - both boys have overflowing shelves and we've a huge bookcase in the front room that needs a good sort.

Clothes I find easier to sort - I donate to the CS I work in or give them to friends with smaller children.

  2. I love a win-win situation.
The equine body worker who comes to treat my horse doesn't take a payment but requests a donation to Brooke Hospital for Horses in Cairo, so I gather all unwanted bits of tack and rugs up at the yard (mine and others) and list them on eBay with the sale price going directly to the charity.
If you do that, eBay don't charge a listing fee and everybody gets a good deal and a good deed and it leaves a really nice feeling all round!

  3. I am so glad I found you! and I don't know how I did as it was by accident as I read my blog list this morning. I'm an avid recycler, I believe it should be upcycled or recycled if at all possible, and I do take tons of stuff to charity shops, which of course they turn around and sell, but you have given me a brilliant idea, of course... why not give it away? If someone needs it, let them have it, I don't have a problem with that, you know your things are being used and hopefully not thrown away! We save our planet while saving our pocket books as well. Love this idea! Thank you! Now I have to find a local place that does exchanges and stuff like that, I will try facebook as you suggested, but... hmmmm maybe even a google search? So glad I found you! Happy Halloween!

    1. Why not set up a group yourself and make it specific for your local area, that's what ours is. Add your friends and get them to add people too. Call it Community Needs or something like that. People can then not only get rid of their unwanted stuff but also can post requests for anything they might need. I've never set up a group on Facebook before but it can't be that hard as it has step by step instructions. Glad you found the blog :)

  4. What a great post! I think I too will start up a Facebook group for our local area - it's certainly worth a try!! The local Sell/Swap Facebook group is extremely popular, you can sell stuff on there in minutes, but there isn't a group, as far as i'm aware, where you can specifically give stuff away for free, etc. I often take bags of books and clothes to the charity shops, but especially at the moment as we are moving house next month (hopefully!), I just have so many things that I want to get rid of - and would love to know that they've gone to a good and appreciative home! I did actually list a load of empty CD and DVD cases on the Sell site as "free" and they were snapped up. Thanks so much for writing this post, it has really inspired me to start up a group :)

    1. The great thing about it is, is that the person who wants the stuff comes to collect. Very handy when wanting to get rid of the more bulkier items. Good luck with your group x
